Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.
The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity. Collective human consciousness, in its present self-centered state, seems largely unable to measure up to the demands called forth by Auroville’s aim of Union!
An all-inclusive unity, that celebrates multiplicity, can materialise only when collective self-development becomes a conscious and willed growth of consciousness.
The Auroville Charter
1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But, to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment
The 4 points of Auroville’s Charter, – the mantric text gifted to it at its birth by The Mother; and from which all the contours of its development are derived, – cover the whole gamut of human actions, from the spiritual to the most outwardly material.
It calls upon the Aurovilians to comprehend the ancient past, to harness its energies and spring boldly towards future realizations.
Those who choose to live here must transcend all exclusivity – this strong propensity of the egoistic consciousness which expresses itself in every sphere of human thought and action.
To be willing servitors is a state of the highest spiritual consciousness and Auroville’s Charter trenchantly demands this as a first condition.
A Living Field of Learning
Auroville is a universal township in South India dedicated to human unity and the evolution of consciousness.
It is not a conventional campus, but a living field of learning, exploration, and transformation.
Education in Auroville is about becoming conscious, discovering purpose, and participating in the adventure of human evolution. Rooted in the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, Auroville offers a uniquely immersive experience for teacher education that addresses the whole being: physical, vital, mental, psychic, and spiritual.

Grounding Integral Yoga in daily life— engaging with the world to transform it, not escape from it.

The Aim of Education in Auroville
There are few directions given to Auroville on the topic of education by The Mother. From the beginning her guidance came in broad strokes rather than detailed explanations: an approach she referred to as a ‘pressure of consciousness’ which would ‘arrange’ people and things. The onus seemed to be rather on individual choice demanding an effort and a ‘rising up’ of consciousness.
The seminal idea- forces that represent Auroville’s spirit, such as The Charter of Auroville, and the set of six steps she titled To be a True Aurovilian, among others, create the wholeness of vision as well as the programme of action – an individualized self-education – that every Aurovilian undertakes. Indeed, every person, who chooses Auroville, becomes a student of self-seeking, whether this search has awakened to awareness or not.
